Sep 13, 2017 at 9:40 comment added Kadalikatt Joseph Sibichan Matthew 1:20-24 narrate the developments : " But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, .. ....... When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife". Read on to Verse 25 which says : " .. but had no marital relations with her.." which substantiates that Joseph indeed had the legal right to beget children through Mary , which of course, would have to be preceded by marriage. That is what the scriptures say.

Sep 10, 2017 at 17:31 comment added Kristopher Somewhere I read that marriage wasn't marriage until consummation scripture states that Joseph refrained from sexual relations until after Jesus birth so at least until then they were only betrothed.?
Sep 10, 2017 at 17:02 comment added bradimus @Kris That does not necessarily follow. Catholics believe in the perpetual virginity, but also believe that Joseph and Mary were properly married. See the linked question: christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/59756/…
Sep 10, 2017 at 16:42 comment added Kristopher Since a person was considered married upon consummation the proponents of perpetual virginity find it easier to claim they were not actually married
