I imagine that it emerged from arguments for the divinity of Christ in the context of the Logos, a la A Dialogue with Trypho ch. 128. If one argues that the Logos is God, one must immediately justify how God is One, and so one might argue that the Logos is God categorically and not necessarily ontologically hence the appeal to Aristotle's terminology from Κατηγορίαι (Categories).
