God is the same yesterday, today and forever, and God incarnate was the only One who could fulfill His law. Saints of old had to have faith for salvation (Hebrews 11). God didn't want their sacrifices as much as He wanted them to honor him in their heart. (Malachi --especially 2:1-5).
