A split in a single religious body, often a result of accusations of differences in doctrine (heresy)
A schism is a division or split in a single religious body, commonly referring to the East–West Schism or the Western Schism. It can be distinguished from heresy, which refers to differences in doctrine, in that a schism refers specifically to the division of the body. However, accusations of heresy are typically associated with schisms.
