Man's immortality in the Garden of Eden

In the book of Genesis, God said they would die if they eat from a certain tree

Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

From this verse, it seems to me that man was immortal before they ate the fruit. And after they ate the fruit, God said they should not be allowed to eat from the fruit of life

Genesis 3:22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever

  • Did it mean that man would not die or be killed (even by God) if they ate from the tree. Why was God worried they would live forever?

  • If man was immortal before the fall, the presence of the tree of life had no meaning to them?
