Active study, preaching, and teaching are all mentioned as important throughout the bibleBible.
- Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. [Joshua 1:8 (NLT)]
- How can people have faith in the Lord and ask him to save them, if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear, unless someone tells them? [Romans 10:14 (CEV)]
- In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! [Hebrews 5:12 (NIV)]

But some of the drawbacks and risks of studying/teaching the bibleBible "overly academic"academicly" are pointed to in the bibleBible. Similarly, as in academia in other fields, those who study and teach are not necessarily good practitioners that can serve as good examples to deal with applications.
- "2 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. 3 So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. [Matthew 23:2-3 NIV]
- 22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. [James 1:22 NLT]

77 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 8“ ‘These8 “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me me. 9They9They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’ [Matthew [Matthew 15:7-9 NIV]
Some timesSometimes an "overly academic" perspective can cause tothe focus on secondary issues while neglecting essential principles.
2323 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay tithes of of mint, dill, and cumin. But you have disregarded the weightier matters matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have practiced practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 2424 You blind guides guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. 2525 Woe to you, scribes scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.… [Matthew [Matthew 23:24 BSB]
Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed handed down. And you do many things like that. Mark 7:13 (NIV) (See also also Mark 7:9)
Another principle that seems to apply here is that “Knowledge puffs up while love builds up” [1 Corinthians 8:1]. But of course, all this does not mean that studiengstudying and teaching about knowledge is something bad in general. But there are risks.
In my experience with studying and teaching various topics, it is important toto first focus on the essentials of the big picture, and then gradually zoom in and out on various aspects in detail if necessary. One of the main concepts to study and teach from the bible do areis related to love. But to master this “skill” requires continuous practice and interaction with others. The term “overly academic” is arguably vague, but one way to define it is: when study and teaching looselose balance with practical real-world situations and applications. Maybe there should also be a distinction in the answers between studying and teaching the bible in ana too academic way. The latter seems more harmful asthan the former.
