Therefore they stick with the basic meaning of the NT word (stauros)": there's a bit more to it than that. They have always maintained that the cross is a pagan symbol. They want nothing to do with paganism and to stand distinctly separate from all religions that they say are contaminated with paganism by using cross symbols. Of course the pagan Romans used crosses with crosspieces, but they wouldn't make an exception for Jesus, would they? They were pagans! We expect that from them! | |
