Dec 31, 2018 at 15:31 comment added SLM @curiousdannii you are correct that nowadays people relate virginity as defining whether or not one had sex, but long ago within the context of the virgin Mary, the argument was of the nature the Christ's birth. See the Catholic dogma if you don't believe the difference. (PS added- the song, round yon virgin, mother and child - is a nod to perpetual virginity including birth somehow (not just sex or not).)

Feb 23, 2018 at 1:00 comment added SLM Well, it is interesting and I should have clarified a bit. At the time of Irenaeus, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria, PoJ, Origen, what I find is only two views. Either Jesus was born normally or Jesus passed somehow through Mary. Today, however, probably everyone would say Jesus was born normally somehow. Somehow means miraculously that Mary remained intact. No one today would suggest, like John of Damascus mentioning, that Jesus was born from Mary's side. But that was one choice of two. Again, at that time, they thought either Christ was born normally or passed through her someway.
Feb 22, 2018 at 21:08 comment added Peter Turner RE: your last sentence, are you saying that there are people who do still believe that Jesus was born in a way that was not a normal human birth? I think you're conflating belief in a literal interpretation the Protoevangelium of James with the Doctrine of the Perpetual Virginity of Mary.
