Sep 11, 2016 at 20:14 comment added Dɑvïd @curiousdannii - Hard question (thus avoided above :). But here goes: (1) if going for a freebie, then Outler, available in a nicely formatted PDF. Chadwick isn't flawless, (2) his would be my purchase of choice, especially since available in cheap paperback. I found his explanation of the structure of the thought of the Confessions hugely illuminating. (3) I don't know Boulding's version so well, but have been impressed with the bits I've read. O'Rourke comes in for an honorary (4th), as his approach is fresh, but the omission of Books X-XIII is such a shame.
