Apr 10, 2014 at 19:50 | comment | added | Narnian | @Matt In David Delong's answer, he cites a website about the endowment ceremony--ldsendowment.org. I've been reading through it, and it's quite interesting. Of particular note is that the author, apparently an active LDS member, comes from the perspective that sacred does not mean "secret". He actually divulges quite a bit about the ceremony. So, perhaps there is more than one perspective on this, and at least some LDS members feel that they can answer this type of question.
Apr 10, 2014 at 13:01 | comment | added | Matt | ... not out of censure or censoring, but for respect. @Caleb A fair disagreement, to be sure, but I do not agree with your statement, "A good question may garner no good answers if it actually comes to that." -- In all my relatively limited experience on Stack Exchange, the best questions always have answers which can be up-voted for good, reliable sources, and "accepted" because it is the correct and authoritative answer to that individual inquiry. For what the asker is looking for here, no answers will be able to sufficiently meet those standards.
Apr 10, 2014 at 12:58 | comment | added | Narnian | @Matt Mason did assert that I had been "warned" not to ask such things. That's what I was referring to, so, yes, someone was, in fact, threatening me. No, I've never seen the garments. I recently came across some information on the LDS and have been asking a few questions about it. That's all. The information mentioned that there were symbols on the garments which also happened to be used in freemasonry. So, I figured I would ask.
Apr 10, 2014 at 12:52 | comment | added | Matt | @Narnian It's understandable if you didn't know that these are not discussed outside the temple since you are not LDS. As such, you've been informed and now you know. Has any honest Mormon ever shown you the garment? I doubt it, because it's sacred. And no one is threatening you. In fact, I personally do not disagree with you. But I do not think that you must be "subject to the most overly-sensitive person" to be respectful. The LDS website requests that these things not be discussed outside their temples... (cont'd)
Apr 10, 2014 at 12:07 | comment | added | Narnian | @MasonWheeler I did not phrase my question in any disparaging manner, either. Garments are worn outside the temple, so how am I supposed to even know what LDS members find offensive or sacred? It was not my purpose to offend anyone in any way.
Apr 10, 2014 at 12:03 | comment | added | Narnian | @MasonWheeler I would suggest that whether or not someone finds something offensive must not be the standard that governs what questions are asked in any forum. If that were the case, we would all be held captive to the most overly-sensitive person or group. Indeed, any particular group could just take offense at almost anything and shut down any question they feel does not put them in a good light. There are certainly groups like this in the political realm and in other religions. For this forum, I do not believe threats or warnings should be made to shut down honest inquiry.
Apr 10, 2014 at 6:46 | comment | added | Caleb | @MasonWheeler I'm going to have to disagree with your assessment of "off-topic". Reticence on the part of answers to provide sources does not inherently make something off topic. A good question may garner no good answers if it actually comes to that. In the mean time if there is anything offensive in the way this is asked by all means lets fix it.
Apr 10, 2014 at 3:57 | comment | added | Mason Wheeler♦ | @Narnian: In addition to Calvin's comment, you've been warned before that questions regarding the contents of LDS temple ceremonies are unanswerable in the StackExchange format, because they are held to be sacred by Latter-Day Saints and they are not shared with the world in general, and therefore there are no authoritative sources to cite. Since that is one of the important things we look for here, particularly when questions of doctrine are involved, this question is effectively off-topic within the bounds of our community standards.

Apr 9, 2014 at 21:50 | comment | added | Calvin | @Narnian – I have no doubt that your question is honest, and I agree that those without a group are not bound by the laws of that group. The problem is the subject group of the question find the question offensive, so posting the question shows disrespect to that group.

Apr 9, 2014 at 18:35 | comment | added | Narnian | @Matt It's an honest question. No religious group ought to be able to censure questions by those outside of their group. Only those within the group are bound to abide by the laws of the group. This is a legitimate question.
Apr 9, 2014 at 18:33 | comment | added | Matt | This content is highly sacred to Mormons. The content in this question is offensive if discussed outside of Latter-day Saint temples.
