Saved from the web by a job in industry. Coding GUI for computer-aided railway realignment machinery.

At last a job where I have time to do stuff properly and don't have to worry about loads of unfixed bugs coming back to haunt me.

comment Do Catholic bishops have greater power within their congregation than Anglican bishop's over theirs?
Of course, sometimes it doesn't work out so cleanly :)

Good answer to a mediocre question. I'm not sure which bits are to be considered 'preachy'.

comment Is it possible (intellectually honest) to 'contextualise' the 'anti-divorce' passages, but not the 'anti-homosexual' ones?
Sorry, this is a good answer in and of itself, but to a different question...

@Flimzy, except that Jesus specifically said (my paraphrase) that divorce was 'tolerated' because of our 'hardness of heart': an exemption which he didn't extend to remarriage.

comment What is the biblical basis for the claim that abortion is immoral?
@muistooshort, but he wasn't saying that the law had a bearing on scientific truth, he was saying that scientific truth should have a bearing on the law.

PS: I have heard (what seems to me a totally sophistic) 'interpretation' of your first text where the "But if there is harm" would refer to the mother, not the child. Another slightly more plausible view is that at this time in history, it was more about property rights than ethics.

Peter, it's only a baby if it's wanted, if it's unwanted, they call it a foetus...

comment In which Christian group is “prosperity theology” derogatory?
That aside, this questions is badly phrased. You would be better asking which groups actually believe in prosperity theology, because the list is (comparatively) very small. Also, your last sentence is a different question.

@Anonymous, imagine yourself living in a shabby home in Africa for a moment, and seeing a rich-looking pastor on the television inviting you to just have faith and you will be rich too: you just have to spend all your money on his books which explain how in 10 easy steps. He gets to build his beautiful church building with nicely polished floors and state-of-the-art air conditioning. And you stay in your shabby home.

My thoughts exactly. "As it happens, I have this bridge..."
