comment Why is there a modern misconception about Christianity and Science?
Galileo is actually the subject of a myth of his own. Just about everything that "everyone knows" about him is flatly contradicted by the historical record: that he was right about the solar system (he wasn't; he believed in heliocentrism but got all the other details wrong,) that he made great scientific discoveries in astronomy (there was nothing unique or groundbreaking about his work,) and that he was unjustly persecuted by the church for teaching heliocentrism. (See above re: he wasn't actually right.)

comment 1 Timothy 4:1-3 - Are We Still Living in the Great Apostasy?
This question, as written, is difficult to answer. As we've already seen, one tradition will say "it's just beginning" and another will say "it's over now." If you want an authoritative answer, and not a bunch of answers that contradict each other, you need to ask what doctrinal perspective you're looking for.

comment What is the LDS Church's position on spiritual gifts
@StevenDoggart: That's a very broad question in its own right, particularly as the LDS understanding of salvation is very different from the Pentecostal version.

comment Is Mormonism a Mystery Religion?
As for my characterization of Mormonism, it depends on the definition. If a mystery religion is one in which participation is "reserved to initiates," then yes, unquestionably so. If the definition is that the religion keeps things secret, then no, because secrets are about maintaining secrecy and exclusivity, and Latter-Day Saints do the opposite.

comment Is Mormonism a Mystery Religion?
@bruisedreed: I'm just going on what the article said: that Justin Martyr acknowledged the similarities between contemporary Christianity and contemporary mystery cults, and remarked upon it--by essentially calling the mystery cults counterfeits of the true mysteries of the Gospel, inspired by demons.

comment What is the reason and meaning of the symbols on the garments worn by Temple-worthy LDS members?
@Narnian: In addition to Calvin's comment, you've been warned before that questions regarding the contents of LDS temple ceremonies are unanswerable in the StackExchange format, because they are held to be sacred by Latter-Day Saints and they are not shared with the world in general, and therefore there are no authoritative sources to cite. Since that is one of the important things we look for here, particularly when questions of doctrine are involved, this question is effectively off-topic within the bounds of our community standards.

comment According to the LDS Church, what is the purpose or result of proxy baptisms for those who have already died?
Welcome to Christianity.SE, Jake. This is a very good answer. But please allow me to clear up one misconception you seem to have. You wrote, There is surely more to be discussed here, but hopefully this is a good start. But StackExchange sites are explicitly not discussion forums; they're Q&A sites where people look for definitive answers to specific questions. We try to keep "chattiness" down to improve the quality of answers and keep the "signal-to-noise ratio" high. As long as you keep that in mind, I think you'll do well here. Please check out the FAQ (link at top) for details. :-)

comment Why does Pilates write 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews'
@MoziburUllah: Their threat to report him to Caesar wasn't just an idle expression of annoyance. He had not governed according to Roman policy, being harsh in his rule and failing to respect the Jewish religion, and they could have gotten him in a lot of trouble. (And his misrule did, in fact, catch up with him not long afterwards, when he was ordered back to Rome after his harsh suppression of a Samaritan rebellion. The Romans preferred to treat their subjugated nations in a more civilized fashion.)
