Thank you for a thoughtful answer that delves into some of the OP's implicit question.

comment Could there have been a pragmatic purpose for the OT legal dietary restrictions?
A) The second Q does not avoid the difficulties of pre/post Law because it was the Giver of the Law who was receiving the meal. Rabbinic scholars contend that the Lord waited one or more hours between consuming the milk and the meat. B) Sorry about your problems with legumes. You may find that your problems lessen with time and practice. C) This is not definitive, but in Gen 1:30, God gives "every green plant for food" and in Gen 9:3 God gives "everything." I draw from the text that man and animals ate plants before the Fall, and eating meat (and attendant shedding of blood) were post-Fall.

Combining meat and milk: Is it healthy? Is it godly? In Gen 18:8, Abraham serves a calf, curds, and milk to the Lord, contravening the Deut 14:21 prohibition. To your "energy level" comment, @audio.zoom, there is strong evidence to suggest that any meat or dairy has a deleterious effect on health; see my post on skeptics.stackexchange.com/a/2058/1403.

You are quite welcome, @audio.zoom. Are you asking something like "Are the OT dietary laws based in pragmatics or something else?" I would say that one can find pragmatic reasons for some of the dietary laws; however, pragmatics are not the main, driving factor for the dietary laws. I believe that they were given as a gift to God's people in order to separate themselves from the surrounding, pagan nations. For example, "Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk" (Deut 14:21) has no pragmatic basis, but instead, God was prohibiting his people from participating in pagan fertility rituals.

As for "correlation vs. causality": please see my answer and discussion at our sister site, skeptics.stackexchange.com/a/2058/1403.

Point taken, @MarcGravell. The last sentence was meant to draw the reader's attention to the concept of "manslaughter" (Deut 19:4-6) and the terminology of "malice aforethought" (Num 35:20, Deut 4:42). Do you think this would be clearer if I added "in Judeo-Christian nations" after "modern principles of culpability"? The fact the other nations share concepts of public safety does not diminish the Pentateuch as a source. And I think this is a powerful linguistic carryover that our modern legal parlance uses some of the words from the KJV.

comment What's so bad about monoergism and monothelitism?
@BenDunlap Monergism is orthodox; let's not confuse it with a heresy! Get the definition from monergism.com: monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/onsite/qna/monergism.html. It states that our salvation comes from a single work of the Holy Spirit.
