comment The question of graven images
Why did God ask Mosses to make graven images in Exodus 25:18-20 and Numbers 21:8-9? Why did God dwell in Salomon's temple which had graven images (1 Kings 6:23-35)? I am asking these because the way in which you resolve these seemingly apparent contradiction will help us to understand your question and answer it more clearly.

comment At what date in history was the last papal anathema officially applied through the death penalty in a papal court against a heretic or protestant?
@Steve : I am sorry. You may not want to believe it and I am not here to make you believe. They did it because of their religious belief. You can read the actual transcripts of court proceeding. All questions were related to devil and their relation with him. Religion played important causal role.

comment Why doesn't the Catholic Church kill heretics anymore?
@fredsbend : Pope Innocent IV's papal bull, ("... although one must stop short of danger to life ....") did not authorize killing of heretics. (I am not saying popes never killed anyone, I am saying killing is not a punishment for heresy)

To @ LCIII, Since @Caleb said that we should provide answers that cite historical events. Can you please provide one or two executions in the history that were ordered by the church. That will give us a picture of which type of executions you have in mind.

@Steve : Can you please explain, why you think it doesn't? (After-all it was done in the name of Christian God, it is even called "Puritan inquisition")

@LCIII : Can you please give me one example where the pope convicted someone to death? //The church did everything but swing the axe.// That is exactly my point. Church did not swing the axe. As long as that did not happen, your question is based on an invalid premise.
