comment What significance did the “heart” possess in the ancient cultures contemporary with the biblical era?
Corresponds more to kidneys in Hebrew. Καρδιά in Greek.

comment If God is omnipresent, is he also in hell?
For Orthodox Christians everyone experiences unfiltered love of God for eternity. Just some will not find this pleasant, his love will be like 'heaping burning coals on their heads.' But wrath is just our perception. He is actually very loving.

That is the irony of it. Douglas Wilson also made this claim, he even debated Christopher Hitchens about it. Google Collision.

Yes but most atheists are driven by a hatred of God. It's rarely mere indifference.

So no we don't deny. We just don't let Western medieval and Latin thought influence how we interpret first century Greek

Western concept of hell is distorted from original concepts, more tied to Latin inferno, corresponds more to Gehanna. But we don't believe people go to Gehenna till after final judgment, so not there yet. Gets complicated though with eschatological time (now, not yet, future, future in present, remember future as past), same kind of time occurs every Sunday at Divine Liturgy

Jesus command is to baptize and teach to obey. We do this as we go, remembering that all authority belong to Jesus and he with us. Concerning hell, two words: Gehenna and Hades - not the same place. Gehenna is where people are sent after final judgment, but this has not happened yet. Hades gets thrown into Gehenna at the end also, the final destruction of death (Paul says it is last enemy to be destroyed).

Jesus died and defeated every humans enemies (while yet sinners he died for us). Now we cooperate with his divine grace to become free from passions so that we can see (with nous) that God is everywhere present and fills all things. Is true whether we see it or not. Must learn to see (with nous not mind).

God loves and has mercy freely, he not bound by any "need". That is pagan to think god is bound by external abstract laws. He has mercy by his free loving choice. No need to but does anyway. Why we so gratitude
