There is definitely a notion of atonement when Jesus died on the cross. However, in addition to atonement, there has to be other reasons why he died on the cross (i.e. defeating death). If it was only atonement, it seems as if Jesus dying on the cross is so that we don't have to deal with the physical messiness of gutting animals.
