comment Why was eating meat on Fridays forbidden in the Catholic Church for so many years?
Also, please note that eating meat on Fridays is/was not forbidden because it's an intrinsic sin; instead, it was forbidden as a matter of discipline. It's only sinful because we are bound to obey our bishop on a few matters, including this one.

I think it's out of place in a civil place like this to accuse churches that disagree with you of breaking Christ's teachings to "gain money from foolish 'sheep.'" :-)

Perhaps it would help if you highlighted: "The Christian religion sanctions national customs wherever these are not against the great principles of truth and holiness." That seems to be the direct answer to the question.

comment Before the fall of Adam, did anything die?
@Nicholas, you might want to specify which viewpoint you are asking for. Do you want the Catholic position? The Lutheran position? The Evangelical position? The Creationist position? The ... :)

comment Can Humans become Angels?
Futhermore, in the OP's KJV passage, "I am of thy brethren the prophets" can mean "I am the same kind/order of thy brethren the prophets" (i.e. I perform the same function).

comment What is a Christian's justification for a legal prohibition of homosexual marriage?
@Flimzy: Good thing I said it, then. :) What do you think he said instead? Please note that I'm speaking only about the paragraph that ends with "why the state gets to (re-) define that which God has defined and put together", and his comments. I know he presented other arguments in his answer.

comment Can I be homosexual and still be a Christian?
Great source about why enuchs are often (sometimes?) considered homosexual.

Let me try restate what you said: among other reasons (listed in your answer), you wouldn't want the word "marriage" to be used to describe homosexual partnerships so that you and many other ordained ministers would be less likely to be nearly forced to officiate "homosexual marriages". This particular reason is a practical, not a scriptural nor doctrinal reason.

comment Is it possible for an atheist to be moral?
@Bane, I ask you for patience and respect for people's sensibilities here. Here's a more constructive way to say what you said (if I understood correctly): "For many people, morality boils down to two rules: hurting others is bad and helping others is good." When put that way, it is clear that the comment is off-topic, as it doesn't answer the question nor address the answer.

I think it's more accurate to say: "my government, acting on my behalf, allowing [not doing] that which I detest." Also, would it not be a quick counterargument to your last paragraph to say that marriage (the God-ordained institution) and civil-marriage (the government-recognized partnernship) are two completely different things?

Upvoting, not because I think these are great arguments, but because it answers the question.

comment Why do some Christians believe it is moral to be a homosexual?
This answers the question "Why do some Christians believe it is moral to be a homosexual?", and in general, "Why do some Christians believe things that most other Christians don't?" but if you read the full post, he is asking about what arguments they use to support their position, not why it is possible for them to have such a position.
