@Flimzy Interesting. Another (separate) question then might be at what point this became common in the Catholic church, because when Zwingli first did it it was an aberration from contemporary practice. Also, I'm sure it depends upon what part of the Protestant church one is in; in the churches I have been in (conservative Presbyterian), topical sermons are much less common than expository ones.

I was hoping you would offer an answer. :) +1 The article that @bruisedreed linked to in the comment above, though, discusses how Hodge approached theology as a science in which you use induction on the data of the Bible---is this an accurate representation? If so, that is hardly in agreement with Owen.
