Please consider migration to Biblical Hermeneutics. While this would require some tweaking (and may need to be broken into two separate questions), I think it could work there. But probably not here.

comment Why is Christmas on December 25th?
The main thing I'm looking for is good research. There are millions of good answers to this question on the Internet. There are very few that cite scholarly sources (not just blogs and Wikipedia articles) that are written by folks well familiar with Church history. In short, I'm looking for an expert answer (and chose to award this bounty around the Christmas season intentionally - the bounty ends on Christmas day).

@PeterTurner If you expanded your answer more, cited the original papal comments rather than a blog post about them and gave a verifiable and reliable source for each claim, including those made by the Pope (the papal comments often have well-cited opinions in my experience, look up the Pope's sources), I'd gladly accept your answer.

Also, please avoid turning the response into an apologetic for the date chosen over and against any preexisting pagan holidays, or vice versa (if it was indeed a pagan holiday, which I don't know if it truly was). Simply answer the question: "Why was the date chosen?"

This is very good, though. I just want to be able to verify your claims for myself. Thanks +1

Seeing an answer of mine might help show how I cite sources and would like to see others do it (formatting is not important, just the fact that they are cited well and for most every historical claim).

This is good, but please add more sources for your claims (and preferably not Wikipedia, although this is fine for general claims that are not in dispute). For instance, you wrote, "in 274 AD, Aurelius established December 25th (the winter solstice) as the Birth of the Sun Unconquered (Natales Soli Invicti)." Yet there is no source for this information. For an example of how I answer, which gives an example of using sources (formatting not important, just the idea of using sources for claims), see this answer I wrote.

I should also mention that I'm not a big fan of using Wikipedia as the main source for any claims, it is better to find the source cited in the Wikipedia article and reference it directly (after ensuring it was properly cited - I can't tell you how many times I've looked up references on Wikipedia and found no more than a tenuous connection between the claim made in the article and what the author actually said; this is true of popular books, too - such as 'Pagan Christianity', where the author makes the opposite claim of his sources constantly which is dishonest scholarship).

@PeterTurner that would certainly be interesting to me, and is one of many ways folks could successfully answer this question well. The main part for me is verifiable and reliable sources, and canon law, Church councils, writings of the Fathers, etc. all count for that.

There are so many worldview presumptions in this question. Read some articles on 'dualism' and 'anthropomorphism.'

This is too broad. You could ask about a specific martyr, but asking about all of them would require a book to answer.

@CecilBeckum that may be true, but the solution isn't to ask the same question again in a different way, but to provide a better answer on the existing question (or offer a bounty explaining what you're looking for to encourage others to do so).
