I am a web application developer working in PHP/MySQL/JQuery and related technologies. I also have attended two years of seminary. I am puritan in my theology and would point to the Westminster Standards as a good guide for theological questions.

I know that this is common in Judaism after Christ to think this way, but I know of no place in scripture that teaches this. Men are consistently seen as the head of their families in Scripture.

Actually @JimG. I am thinking you are misunderstanding what idolatry is and how deep it goes in all of us. But I may be wrong. :-)

comment Can you explain this Free Will / Predestination illustration?
So this is not truly 'free will' as in the freedom to choose anything. I am 'constrained' to do what my heart desires, and God has created my heart. Will remove the -1 if you edit the post.

You say that a reformed theologian would hold the doctrines of predestination and free will equal. That is not correct. A reformed theologian would consider free will a false term but speak in terms of free moral agency. That is that we always choose what we most want to do. That may be giving the man pointing the gun at me my wallet (I don't really want to do it but given all options it appears to be the best one and what I most want), or eating a juicy strawberry. The issue is that God has made us and has crafted us in such a way as our highest desire is to always follow HIs plan.

Idolatry is giving honor or glory to anything but God, in it's grossest form it means associating an object with a deity but that is not the full definition. Calvin called humans idol factories. We make idols of many many different things all day long. So I stand by my statement.

-1 because you mis-characterize reformed theology.

comment Why does Calvinism need the doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints if it believes in Unconditional Election?
Maybe the issue here is that it was not Arminius who brought the complaint to the Dutch church, but instead His students. We have a reference above to the actual words (translated of course) and that should be sufficient. On the other hand, many who call themselves Arminians today are somewhere in the middle.
