I am a web application developer working in PHP/MySQL/JQuery and related technologies. I also have attended two years of seminary. I am puritan in my theology and would point to the Westminster Standards as a good guide for theological questions.

I don't believe that the threat withdrawn is a problem, it may be that this could be construed as a gracious act, maybe the other elder had a change of heard over the severity of the issue.

I voted your answer correct with one proviso. I do believe that your desert example is not accurate. Just like David longed for the temple, the person in the desert could long to partake of the Lord's table.

@Flimzy It seems to me that the point here is that we don't get to make up our own rules. We are keeping His feast, not our own. The question is asking whether it is biblical to use grape juice. I do not believe that beer (as great as it is) or Pepsi are valid in communion. We see in scripture the term 'fruit of the vine' in relation to communion and I believe that sets the standard.

Okay I have updated and expanded the question a lot. I am amazed that not one baptist has jumped on here to posit an answer in a whole day...

@Matt What I really mean is credo baptism. Baptism on credible confession of faith only which is technically the baptist position as far as I have ever been told. I am going to update the question to reflect this.

@BrandonBoone exactly the opposite question as to the infant baptism one.

I suppose it does not matter. But I would like to hear from someone who can cogently defend their personal convictions on the matter. I normally totally stump the people I talk to - I want better arguments, more thorough arguments.

I am also troubled by the last line in the MH quote. Is he discounting what he has just said "and it was right that they should do so"? Seems strange. I have always read "But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God." as Paul telling people that contentions are not allowed, not that if you are contentious then you are suddenly okay.

This is a question my church (Reformed Presbyterian) wrestled with for a while, we ended up with a mixed tray (I would prefer a common cup but oh well). I agree with what Narnian says, "The Fruit of the Vine" is what is prescribed. Never once does the Greek word for wine (oinos) appear in the related texts.

Yes, but what is the biblical basis for your answer @DoubtingThomas? We can think a lot of things 'personally' and that is what causes a lot of problems in the Church. I do agree with you btw, just want a Biblical answer.

Customs don't change for no reason. Was it the womens' liberation movement that pushed the change through, or maybe some other change in culture?
