He was being mocked for claiming that he was King of the Jews, so the soliders gave him a "crown." And to make it worse, they made it of thorns, so it was extremely painful. |

Consider this: "Where did thorns come from?" Genesis 3 includes thorns and thistles in the curse of sin. Isaiah 53:6 says, "We all, like sheep, have gone astray. Each of us has turned to his own way, and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." Hence, crowning Jesus with thorns symbolized God laying the curse of sin on Jesus. |
