The Catholic church is popular across the world, and for good reasons. The Pope claims to be a representative of God on earth. But why would we need a representative when the Bible clearly states that Jesus is the way the truth and light, and that no one comes to the Father except through him (Jesus).

So is there any truth to the Pope's claims? Is he some kind of mediator?

This is highly contested. I gather that there is a high Protestant ratio on the site, which may influence things. As for a doctrine answer... Catholic doctrine would say "yes"; Protestant doctrine would say "no". – Marc Gravell Jan 4 '12 at 19:21

I don't think this question is constructive, as it's worded, as it's only soliciting opinion and debate. It could be edited to be a good question, perhaps by asking "Why do Catholics believe the Pope is God's representative on Earth?" – Flimzy Jan 4 '12 at 19:22

Catholic answer = yes he is what he claims to be, other denominations answer = no he isn't. Is that what you're looking for in an answer? I'm not sure what else you're expecting. – Waggers Jan 4 '12 at 19:24
@Flimzy What are your reasons for not believing that he (the pope) is God's representative on Earth? – pyler Jan 4 '12 at 19:34
