This question already has an answer here:

Why did the Father punish Jesus for our sin?

This seems like punishing an innocent person for a crime, instead of the real culprit.

@Flimzy: not sure this is a duplicate. The other is about the mechanism - did it have to be death? This is about why Jesus was punished for our sin, which I think is a great question and it goes to the heart of the Gospel. –  Wikis Oct 24 '13 at 13:15

@Narnian: Just because Jesus offered himself does not mean the Father didn't punish him. A sentence served by one who turns himself in, is still punishment. –  Flimzy Oct 24 '13 at 13:50

@Narnian: my point is, that's not a reason not to answer - quite the opposite. –  Wikis Oct 24 '13 at 13:51

Romans 3:26 - "To demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has put his faith in Jesus."

God is Just and Holy. Sin must be punished. However, he has made a way in Christ that the debt could be satisfied by Jesus for those who put their faith in Him.

Jesus voluntarily took the place of all who will trust in Him.

I will edit the answer and try to make it more clear. –  Argusvision Oct 24 '13 at 14:28

As to your example, there are some places that do have a "right of substitution". So in a place that had that as a standing law, yes they would accept it. To understand why Jesus was able to be our substitute, it might help to understand the Old Testament Sacrificial system. An animal was slain to atone for sins, but Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for ALL sin. –  Argusvision Oct 24 '13 at 14:32
